hot这里是指触电的，带电的

ahotwire高压电线

sincethen从那时起，注意由since引导的时间状语从句，主句要用完成时态。

findout查明，后面跟how引导的宾语从句，注意语序是陈述句的语序。

carelesslythrewaway.

fires用复数，泛指许多火灾

cause这里的意思是指引起

Whatcausedhisfailure.

此句中cause是导致

glass注意在句中是不可数名词

aglass一个玻璃杯

glasses复数形式是指眼镜

start这里是引发的意思，跟上句中的cause意思相近。

5、Henoticedtheremainsofasnakewhichwaswoundroundtheelectricwires

remains用复数形式，指尸体

是which引导的定语从句，修饰asnake

wound缠绕，是wind的过去分词，做表语，相当于形容词，曾经在27课接触过这个词，在当时句子中指蜿蜒而行的。

6、Thebirdhadsnatchedupthesnakefromthegroundandthroppeditonto

thewires.

snatchup抓起，snatch有迅速抓取的意思

onto=onto

7、Whenitdidso,itsentsparksdowntothegroundandtheseimmediatelystarted

thefires.

so是代词，指代windingitselfroundthewires.

these也是代词，指代sparks

8、AtlastfiremenhaveputoutabigforestfireinCalifornia.

用现在完成时体现动作的完成对现在的影响。

9、Sincethen,theyhavebeentryingtofindouthowthefirebegan.

用现在完成进行时表示动作已经延续到目前，也许已经完成，也许还在进行。

10、Forestfiresareoftencausedbybrokenglassorbycigarettes.

用一般现在时表示一般看法。

11、Yesterday,thefiremenexaminedthegroundcarefully,butwerenotableto

findanybrokenglass.

用一般过去时叙述过去发生的动作，带有时间状语yesterday.

12、Thebirdhadsnatchedupthesnakefromthegroundandthroppedit

ontothewires.

用过去完成时表示动作发生在叙述中的时间（过去）之前。
